A late goal from Ki Sung-yeung earned Sunderland a shock win over Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.

Sunderland 2-1 Chelsae (a.e.t.). Sunderland reached the semi-finals of the League Cup for the first time in 14 years thanks to Ki Sung-yeung's 118th-minute winner at the Stadium of Light.

After a goalless first half, Chelsea took the lead within a minute of the restart when Lee Cattermole bundled the ball into his own net trying to prevent Frank Lampard form turning Cesar Azpilicueta's cross. Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone tried to claw the ball out but thanks to Hawk-Eye's Goal Decision System referee Anthony Taylor was able to confirm it had crossed the line.

With just two minutes of normal time remaining Sunderland equalised through substitute Fabio Borini to send the match into extra-time. A penalty shootout loomed until Ki turned in the box to fire in his first goal for
Sunderland since joining on loan from Swansea City, with whom he won the competition last season.
Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet hoped that the victory would spur his side on in the Barclays Premier League, where they are bottom of the table and next face Norwich City at home on Saturday.
