Ronaldo saves Ole, Juventus unpick Chelsea, Barcelona humiliated

Matchday 2 of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League did not disappoint on Wednesday. From Munich where Robert Lewandowski continues to set ridiculous goal-scoring records to Portugal where Barcelona’s season took another battering after Lionel Messi’s exit but the biggest game has to be the one at Old Trafford where under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needed his team to win.

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his record 178th Champions League appearance with a stoppage time winner as Manchester United came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1 at Old Trafford. Ronaldo’s 95th-minute effort earned United a much-needed three points after Alex Telles’ sensational hit had cancelled out Paco Alcacer’s opener.

Benfica inflicted more misery on crisis club Barcelona with a 3-0 thrashing of the Catalan side, a victory that leaves the Portuguese outfit in a strong position to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

Darwin Nunez’s double took the headlines, but it was a fine performance from captain Lucas Veríssino that ensured Benfica emerged with a clean sheet despite the visitor’s dominance of possession.
