Soccer -- or football, depending on what part of the world you call home -- superstar and pop culture icon David Beckham will retire from the sport at the end of the current season. He has two games left for Paris-St. Germain, and is going out on the tails of a title-winning season.

"It's a good way to go out," Beckham tells the Associated Press. "It's every athlete's dream, every footballer's dream to go out on the top -- on top form or winning a trophy ... leaving as a champion."

The husband of Posh Spice, aka fashion designer Victoria Beckham, is as well known for his ever-changing hairstyles, his bold fashion choices, and his underwear modeling as he is his soccer skills.

The title inspiration for the 2002 comedy "Bend It Like Beckham" started his professional career with Manchester United in 1992. In 2003 he moved on to Real Madrid, then traveled across the pond to help popularize the sport in the United States with a stint on the Los Angeles Galaxy. During that time, he played on loan for A.C. Milan.

Becks made waves in January by announcing he would donate his entire Paris-St. Germain salary to children's charities. He holds several records in the sport, and is the first English player to win league titles in win league titles in four different countries -- England, Spain, the U.S. and France.

Beckham, who recently moved with his family from Los Angeles back to London, plans to own an MLS expansion team in the U.S.
